Jihadists reclaim some lost ground in west Aleppo after downing Syrian chopper
BEIRUT, LEBANON (3:10 P.M.) – The jihadist rebels have retaken a number of points in western Aleppo this afternoon, following the downing of a Syrian military chopper near the town of Uram Al-Kubri. According to reports from west Aleppo, the jihadist rebels have retaken Talat Qurtaba and Abu Salim after a swift counter-offensive near the the strategic Regiment 46 Base. The reports said the Syrian Army never fully secured these areas prior to the jihadist counter-offensive, which ultimately led to their withdraw from these points earlier this afternoon. Similar to their attack on Nayrab this week, the jihadists and their Turkish-backed allies shot down a Syrian military chopper in western Aleppo before launching this new operation. It is not clear where the militants got their anti-aircraft missile from, but according to some Syrian activists, they were likely supplied by the Turkish Armed Forces.

It’s Bong Joon Ho’s world now, the rest of us just live in it. The Oscars were on Sunday and they were… long! The show proceeded without a host, again, and instead decided to fill their runtime with presenters presenting presenters, an opening musical number that referenced multiple films not nominated for anything, and Eminem for reasons still unknown. Despite Mr. Mathers’ random-as-hell performance of an 18-year-old song, the best part of the night was seeing Todd Phillips get beat out by Bong Joon Ho and the Parasite crew for Best Director and Best Picture. The film went on to win for Best Original Screenplay, Best International Film, and Best Oscar GIFs (unofficial). While we’re busy handing out accolades, let’s look at the nominees for Paste’s funniest tweets of the week.

At one stage, the original 30-plus room Brancepeth station was the largest in the district. Beetham lives on a nearby farm and runs a beef and sheep business over the two properties. This is hilly land - baked dry and brown in the summer, but cold and wet in the winter. It is sandstone country, with easily eroded hillsides stretching down to a river - the Wainuiora - that runs along the valley. The family has been planting trees for years to keep the land from slipping.
